Website Basics

This article looks at: The Internet, How Websites Work, and How to Get A Website.

Business is booming. You're ready to hit the information superhighway - you'd like your share of that international business, but you just plain get the jitters when it comes to the Internet and all that computer mumbo jumbo. Well, here's a little secret - it's really not that hard once you know a few basics.

The Internet . . .
The Internet is simply a bunch of websites from around the world that you can access from your computer by using the URL or address/location of the website. Sort of like writing your Aunt Daisy's postal address on a letter and popping it into the post.

The difference is, website addresses begin with "http://www . . ." and end with .com, .co.nz, .net, or .org or something like that. For instance, if your Aunt Daisy had a website, its address might be: http://www.auntdaisy.co.nz. And instead of writing the address on an envelope, you type it into a browser or Internet programme on your computer and push the enter key.

The Website . . .
Websites consist of one or more "pages". For instance, a one-page website is just that - one page, like a page of a book. If that page is longer than the height of your computer screen, you can use the arrow or page-down keys, or the scroll bar on the right of your screen to "scroll" down the page.

This kind of one-page website is ideal for personal websites or small business websites that simply want to get information about themselves on the superhighway. For an example of a one-page website, click here This kind of website is probably your most affordable option - from $70.

A website with more than one page will have "links" to its other pages. A link is simply a word, line of text or a picture/image that when you click on it with the mouse pointer, will take you to another page, like what we've used in the previous paragraph. A link is usually distinguished from ordinary text by being a different colour and underlined. But links can also be images or fancy text. You will recognise a link because your mouse pointer will turn into a little hand when it goes over it.

Getting a Website . . .
To build a website, you need to use a webdesign programme, such as Frontpage, or know a computer language called Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML. If you'd like to learn a bit more about HTML, there are many free tutorials to be found on the Internet. check out these sites:

HTML will build you a basic website that can look attractive, but if you want something with a little more impact, it helps to have a few other tricks up your sleeve, such as Javascript and graphic design.
If you don't have the expertise - or you're not interested or don't have the time to learn - don't panic! Just as there are engineers who design bridges, and architects who design your home, there are webdesigners who will design you a website. Many offer additional services as well, such as the team at Componic webdesign, who will design your website, do the graphics, write the text for you and we'll even take the photographs.

So as you can see, the Internet is not that daunting afterall. It's just another tool of business, another excellent way of getting your message across to potentially millions of Internet users. So go on, get online, reach that international market - you never know, you may even have some fun!
